Imagine gathering together a hundred or so of the most experienced and faithful biblical preachers from around the world today and asking them to share their experiences and insights with you. How awesome would that be?!
Well, that is effectively what The Art and Craft of Biblical Preaching does. It is a collection of articles from various preaching resources covering the whole scope of biblical preaching. The blurb on the back of the book describes it quite acurately as 'an omnibus of over 200 chapters by some of today's most respected preachers covering every aspect of the preacher's craft'.
For anyone who has a regular responsibility of preaching from God's word this book is an essential resource that will shape your attitude and hone your skills in biblical preaching for the better. It is arranged into a logical order of topics, starting with the principles and convictions of biblical preaching and ending with the matter of the delivery and evaluation of our preaching. However, it is not intended to be a linear front-to-back read, and so the subject, scripture and author indices help the reader jump in and out of the collection depending on their individual need or preference.
At £15-20 it is quite pricey. However, the real value of this book is in its long-term usage. I have been delving in and out of this book for over two years now, taking an article that particularly grabs me or challenges me and mulling it over as I prepare any forthcoming talks. I suspect that I shall be doing this sort of 'cherry-picking' for many years to come.
I would recommend this book as an essential resources for anyone who has preaching responsibility: youth and children's leaders, ministry associates, evangelists, people who are often invited to be guest speakers; anyone who regularly preaches the truths of God's word to others.
